Discipline

So, as it turns out, I struggle with discipline. I never used to think I did but that’s probably because when I was young I never quit anything I started and in my naiveness I thought that’s what discipline meant. All it really meant was that I had put my mind to never quit anything I started. So in a sense, I was disciplined never to quit anything, but in the actual activities I participated in, I was never too disciplined at all. I took piano lessons but if I practiced as much as I complained about practice, I’d be much more proficient. I’d go to swim practice but I could have been a better swimmer if I had practiced to the fullest. I went to college but I could have learned more if I had actually read all the books that were assigned. Now I’m starting to realize that I’m great at doing lots of things just not doing any of them to the fullest. The times where I see my lack of discipline the most in my life are with reading the Bible, praying and eating healthy/working out. I have the hardest time getting into healthy routines and because it’s not something I HAVE to do (as opposed to work etc…), it usually gets left out. See what happened to my photo a DAY!

So, I’ve decided, baby steps. I’m going to start becoming disciplined one step at a time. If I can’t be in good practice now, how will I ever teach that to children someday?!?! Not only that, but where will other big things in my life suffer?

Step 1: Eating Healthy/Exercise
The gentleman is going to do this one with me. We are going to really be intentional about what we put in our bodies and how we treat them. It will make us feel better about ourselves and give us more energy to be disciplined about other things in life! How will we do this? Well, I’m going to make a menu on Sunday nights so that I’ve written down what we’ll be eating all week = more accountability, less snacking (we’ve already cut chips out of our diets), and more working out (3 times a week at least).

Here’s my photo for the week (we’ve been very busy) and it’s of a yummy smoothie he made for us for dinner the other night.

So, we’ll see how this goes. I’ll keep you posted.

Don’t Vote Video

WOW! I had no idea that celebrities were so smart and we were so stupid! Gosh, and you’re right, I didn’t know that I had to register to vote, wow! This is the most insulting video about voting I’ve ever seen:

But seriously, you know you gotta vote, right?

Do you really get a free Tootsie Roll POP when you get the Indian shooting the star?

I’ve always wondered that.

photo a day – 9

I think I’ll start naming my “photo a day”s from now on…I think they need titles 🙂

Port comes from Porto (in Portugal). Don’t know why I never put that one together but anyway, it’s good! It’s a wonderfully sweet dessert wine. I like to drink it out of these little crystal glasses my Oma (grandma) gave me…makes me feel like we’re classy, at least a little bit.

Recipe – 1 German Apple Pancake

I found this recipe in Cooking Light Magazine and tried it out last Sunday morning. It was pretty yummy!

Batter:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 Tbsp. sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup eggs (3-4)
1 cup milk
2 Tbsp. butter, melted
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Apple Mixture:
1/2 cup sugar, divided
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup thinly sliced Granny Smith apple

1 Tbsp. powdered sugar (for top when finished)

1. To prepare batter, combine flour, baking powder, 1 Tbsp. sugar, salt, and nutmeg into medium bowl, stirring with a whisk. Add egg. Let stand 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven 425 degrees

3. Coat sides of 10-inch oven proof skillet with cooking spray. Combine 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; sprinkle evenly over bottom and sides of pan. Arrange apple in an even spoke like layer in pan. Sprinkle apple with remaining 1/4 cup sugar. Cook over medium heat 8 minutes or until mixture bubbles. Slowly pour batter over apple mixture.

4. Bake at 425 for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375 (do not remove pancake from oven); bake an additional 13 minutes or until center is set. Carefully loosen pancake with a spatula and slide onto a serving platter. Sift powdered sugar over top. Cut into 6 wedges; serve immediately.

Photo a day – 7 and 8

Dr. Mario…definitely our favorite video game right now. I don’t play video games but jared downloaded this for our Wii a couple months ago and I hadn’t played it in years! It turned out that I remembered how to play it and I was pretty good. It’s the only game I can beat him at!! Well, at least I thought I was good until I played Lindsayand she is impressively, no, freakishly good at it..yikes girl! Anyway, Laura and I are probably a better match.

Do you like our mii characters? They look just like us!

So I’m adding one photo as an addendum to the photo a day 3 just to prove how often this happens. This happened today and I can say I’ve never seen my name spelled with a “u” before! The lady calling out my name (not the same person who wrote it) couldn’t figure out what it said, I just started laughing!
